2 x Deseret News 10k winner

3 x All-American at BYU (back in the day)

10 x state champion in high school (way back in the day!)

Short-Term Running Goals:

I would like to run an Olympic Trials Qualifier in the marathon.

I would also like to run on one more international team before I pack it in!

 Stay healthy!  (My biggest challenge!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run my whole life, and then live vicariously through my children. (just kidding) , but I do want to pass on a healthy lifestyle to them.

Help coach East High to a state championship. (hope it doesn't take a lifetime!)

Personal:

I've been running since I was nine.  I'm married to a fellow runner who inspires and supports me.  We have two children:  Cole (4) and Lily (18 mos.)  I help Bill Cobler coach cross country at East High School.

I met Devra early at Cottonwood Complex for a tempo run.  We were originally going to run it on the Parkway, but changed locations.  My plan was 8 miles.  We ran a loop around the complex.  1100 E to 4500 S, to 1300 E, to 3900S.  It was a hillier route than I usually do for tempos, so I knew it would be slower.  I felt that if I could get in at least a 6:30 per mile groove, that would be good.  

I felt awful from the start.  I went through 2 miles at 12:56.  On pace, but I was already breathing really hard.  Then, the time just started to fall off from there.  I stopped at 4.  I was at 26:30 at that point, and felt like I was digging myself in a hole.

 I don't know what is wrong with me.  I just overall feel crappy; physically, emotionally, and mentally.  I'm just completely drained.  I wish I could pinpoint exactly what I could do to feel better.  Do I rest? or just push through?   And, how do I get to feeling excited and happy about running again?  or even just life in general?

It was a tough start to the week for you... mentally draining to say the least. I don't know which direction to push you in, other than saying that in my own experience, sometimes just getting through the "lows" (even if it means just jogging for a couple days and skipping some harder runs) makes you stronger in the longer term.

That's a tough tempo route. I do most of mine inside the block just east of cottonwood complex. There is a flat, no-traffic area --> http://goo.gl/sl2yUB

i have never experienced anything close to what you went through on monday, but i can only imagine that took a lot out of you. i'm really sorry that happened.

i agree with jake in that just taking it easy for a few days could really help. just do a few days of super easy running -- no worries about pace, mileage, workouts, etc.

i attempted a tempo run two weeks out from des news, and i had to bail at three miles because i was feeling so terrible. it happens, and i think it's best that you stopped if you felt you were digging a hole. this was one workout in the middle of a tough week for you -- don't sweat it, you will bounce back.

Hey Emily I had that same experience yesturday w a speed workout w my friends and is what I'm thinking is I'm still recovering from des news half. That was both our first halfs this year. I do take a lot longer than most to fully recover and feel good. Take some easy run days then try it again. Some R&R will pay off.

Definitely all great advice above. Your body is trying to tell you something and you listenned which is awesome. Take a few down days and just run for fun without any pressure. You are still bouncing back from Des News, you have a baby at home and probably aren't getting enough sleep, and you experienced something very traumatic on Monday. You have plenty of time to prepare for SGM and one off day is really no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I hope I don't come off as giving you too much advice. I think we have some similar characteristics- talent, and the capacity to work really hard... sometimes our biggest danger is trying to do too much, because we can. I'm still trying to learn to relax and trust the process, and not force too much.

I also really want to see you DOMINATE st george! :-)

No, I really trust and appreciate your input (as well as everyone else's). I'm trying to remind myself that when I started this marathon training, I was doing it to get in shape and to enjoy the process. That was working well. It's only after Deseret News that I started putting the pressure on myself. Monday definitely didn't help. But, it's time to get back to that approach and stop worrying so much about outcomes.

I love the blog for all the positive input and energy. It feels nice to be supported.

Em - this is just a blip in the road. It's easy to let a bad or missed wo mess with your head, but let's face it - you are in terrific shape and still gaining fitness. A few easy days should help the mind and the body to heal (with no fitness lost) and you'll be feeling yourself in no time at all.
